Transportation of Musical Instruments

Air Borealis will allow musical instruments to be sky checked and/or accepted as checked baggage as long as they are properly packed in a hard-sided case and meet the size requirements. Please note that carry-on baggage is not permitted on the Twin Otter aircraft due to Aircraft Restrictions and limitations.

Air Borealis will accept instruments as sky check and/or checked baggage if they are not packaged properly (i.e. a soft sided case) provided the passenger agrees to sign a Limited Release Tag that releases Air Borealis for any liabilities.

The Instrument must meet the size requirements for checked baggage and/or sky check baggage:

Sky check baggage: 1 item free of charge, maximum weight of 13lbs, maximum size of 12x16x10 inches.

Checked baggage service: 2 pieces of luggage, free of charge, to a maximum of 50 lbs, with outside linear measurements of 62 in (158 cm).

It is suggested that string instruments have their strings loosened to prevent damage caused by changes in temperature and/or pressure.

Should musical instruments be damaged or lost during travel, where the damage or loss is the result of mishandling by Air Borealis, the maximum liability is $2,300.00. In such instances the passenger must provide Air Borealis with proof of original receipt or a professional appraisal. If the passenger declares the monetary value is greater than Air Borealis’ maximum liability, the instrument is required to be shipped through Air Borealis Cargo whereas a declared value can be established.
