Children from the ages of 8 to 11 who are travelling alone are considered to be “unaccompanied minors”.

Prior to travel, the child traveling must be checked in for their flight by an accompanying adult. This adult must provide photo ID, complete the unaccompanied minor form at the check in counter, and remain in the terminal until the flight the child is on is airborne.  

Air Borealis does not accept Unaccompanied Minors for connecting flights or for any flights that require a layover.  

The child will be in the care of our flight crew member until the flight arrives at the destination, or in event of flight interruption, the child will be in care of a designated Customer Service Representative. At final destination, a Customer Service Representative will escort the child into the airport to meet the authorized individual who is picking up the child. The authorized adult receiving the child must have a valid ID that matches the information on the completed Unaccompanied Minor form. 

There is a service charge of $35 plus additional provincial taxes ($35 – $40.25) per direction for each Unaccompanied Minor. 

Your child’s safety is our priority. Therefore, we cannot accept unaccompanied minors on flights where a weather advisory has been issued for the arrival destination. Once the weather advisory is lifted, we will gladly rebook your child for the next available flight.

Air Borealis will not accept an unaccompanied minor who are connecting onto other airlines.  

Children under the age of two (2) fly on Air Borealis without charge as long as they are traveling with a fare-paying adult and must sit on that adult’s lap for the duration of the flight. The infant must be held during taxi, takeoff, landing, and whenever the seat belt sign is illuminated. 

Note that only one infant can travel on Air Borealis with each adult fare paying customer. Transport Canada Regulations state that children two (2) years or older must occupy their own seat. 

Seating of Children

Air Borealis will accommodate the seating of children under the age of 14 with their accompanying passenger at no additional cost. 

Accompanying passenger must be sixteen (16) years of age or older 

Preboarding is available to ensure passengers are seated together, as long as passengers are present for preboarding at the boarding gate 20 minutes prior to flight departure. 

Air Borealis will facilitate the assignment of a seat to a child who is under the age of 14 years by offering, at no additional charge: 

• In the case of a child who is 4 years of age or younger, a seat that is adjacent to their accompanying person’s seat; 

• In the case of a child who is 5 to 11 years of age, a seat that is in the same row as their accompanying person’s seat, and that is separated from that accompanying person’s seat by no more than one seat; and 
• In the case of a child who is 12 or 13 years of age, a seat that is in a row that is separated from the row of their accompanying person’s seat by no more than one row. 

Expecting Mothers

Expectant mothers are permitted to travel on Air Borealis up until their 35th week of pregnancy with no restrictions. Women whose pregnancies are between 36 and 38 weeks will require a medical note from their doctor. Air Borealis cannot accept expectant mothers past 39 weeks as per standard airline policy. 

Check in time is one hour prior to departure from Happy Valley-Goose Bay and 30-minutes prior to departure at all coastal stations. Check in closes 30-minutes prior to departure for all flights.  

Boarding

Air Borealis pre-boarding provides any unaccompanied minors, passengers with small children, or any passengers in need of assistance the opportunity to board the aircraft at their own pace. This also allows them to get settled in their seats and their baggage stowed prior to general boarding.
